The Presenting Your Best Case workshop gives the county appraiser a basic understanding of the expert witness process. The workshop assists county appraisers in becoming aware of the three main functions of testifying before the county board of equalization, the Board of Assessment Appeals, district court, or at arbitration hearings.
The workshop reviews USPAP and how to apply for preparation and record keeping when preparing for hearing. The course concludes with a lecture presentation by a county attorney.
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will:
- Have an understanding of the three main functions of an expert witness: Preparation, Presentation, and Preservation.
- Become better acquainted with direct examination, cross-examination and re-direct.
- Understand the basics of USPAP required for appraisal reports prepared by the expert witness for testifying in property tax cases.
- Encourage communication and sharing of information between counties regarding the expert witness process.
